Coming up on TFL & my hearty DIY brunches

The photoshoot crew just did a shoot on Wednesday.
As I was launching series 59, I could barely contain my excitement for Series 60.
Haha, the peril of seeing too many pretty bags!
I had to tahan and not say anything, least it takes you girls attention away from Series 59!
Series 60 is going to be a smashing collection of glamourous high-street fashion bags from the likes of Zara, Alexander McQueen!
There's even a gorgeous envelope clutch with a furry flap and an awesome metal buckle!
*fangirl scream*

Wish I have a camera of my own so I can snap away and all of us can drown in a sea of pretty bags photos!

One tough thing about having a bag store is I have to constantly remind myself to bring in bags that suit everyone.
Not just myself.
My personal taste in dressing might be too eccentric for mass market. =D
But this time, I really think I hit jackpot!

Some of these bags have really high cost prices.
In fact, similar as TFL manufactured bags.
But the quality is top notch & amazzzzzzzzing!
And can you believe it, some are even better than TFL manufactured bags!
My jaw dropped when I saw the bags and haven't even touched them yet!
If you buy it from bag stores outside, it's definitely going to set you back by S$70-80.
No one is going to believe that you got it from an online store.
I haven't set the prices but please don't be tooooo hard on me!
The prices are really very reasonable for the boutique quality that you are getting!

And one last thing, Tian Fen Lan's Burberry-inspired bag is here in 4 awesome colours!
I have a love for all things English.
If I'm not a prude about getting more cows slaughtered for my vanity's sake, I would have an entire wardrobe of Burberry bags!

Source: net-a-porter.com

Aaah, if only Singapore has Fall/Winter weather.
No need too cold, just like Australia's winter temperatures will do!
I miss decking out in Fall/Winter apparel!

For its size, I find the bag quite okay in weight. Definitely not a heavy bag. Fits A4 too!
Plus, the metal chain on TFL's version is only half the size and strung at the corner, so that it's definitely not chunky.
There are 2 zipped interiors for you to compartmentalise your stuff, like one interior for work/school, one interior for all your other barangs!
How convenient!

You might have noticed I have a penchant for manufacturing bag designs that are not readily available in the mass market.
In fact, I think some styles are uncommon among local girls.
Yes, I'm already trying to contain my eccentric taste.
But I really adore bag styles that are full of character and edge, yet totally wearable for all.
It makes the usual outfit so much more interesting and bags are always great conversation-starters!

Randomly, I have to learn not to stare after women's bags.
When I'm out, I have this unconscious habit to blank out in the middle of a conversation and turn my head around, if I spot a lady with an interesting bag.
And just stare, and stare, and stare...hahaha!
No camera to snap...so can only gawk.
That makes my friends/Husband very irritated sometimes!

About 2 Saturdays ago, I was at Ion around dinnertime.
Every other restaurant was packed and had queues.
So out of desperation, we ended up at Marmalade Pantry.
It was my first time there.
We ordered the brunch set, which cost S$18++ each.

Having breakfast for dinner, strange right?
Only something Singaporeans will do.

The thing, the set barely filled up half of my stomach!
There's 2 English sausages, baked beans, 2 triangles of bread (I asked for untoasted & brown bread), eggs any style (mine is poached) and some leaves, I think.
I ordered more bread, which came in 4s and at S$1 per triangle.
Given the bread is like those Gardenia bread, I would opt for TCC's hearty breakfast set anytime!
With 24-hour branches at the airport and International Building, you can have breakfast all day & all night long!

Source: www.theconnoisseurconcerto.com

My favourite is the Hearty Breakfast with Eggs & Shrooms!
At only S$11+, it filled me up much better!
The bread is much better than Marmalade Pantry's!

When the Husband was away (again!) for 5 days, I decide I will make myself brunch that can fill me up for hours, so that I have more time to do the launch & tend to the mails!
So here goes!

All ingredients are bought from Cold Storage! I'm a fresh food person! =D
There were more that I couldn't squeeze into the photo like some pesticide-free wild mushrooms and Meiji milk for the eggs.

Let me list some out here, with their estimated prices (sorry, I didn't keep the receipt!):

1. Aunt Jemima's Low Fat Waffles & Homestyle Pancakes
About S$5+ per box of 10 (waffles) or 12 (pancakes)
Cheap huh? Like 50cents per waffle/pancake!
I don't like using pre-mix to make pancakes. More washing-up and cooking fumes.
I pop these into my toaster over for 5-6 minutes, flipping them over in between.
And viola, done in a jiffy!

2. Blueberries from Australia
About $4.95.
Australia's blueberries are sweeter than those from USA.

3. Broad Oak Sausages
S$8.95 for 8 frozen sausages, product of England.
I was looking for something similar to what I had at Marmalade Pantry.
But the usual offerings at Cold Storage were like those Ikea hotdogs.
I found this tucked away at the frozen foods section.
The packaging was opaque and I couldn't see if it was what I want.
But if it's from England, I reckon I can't be too far off.

4. Amroso Tomatoes on Vine
S$4.65 per tray. I think there's about 10/12 in one tray.
I'm no fan of tomatoes because the acidity in them irritates my stomach, which was gastric-battered during my flying days.
But tomatoes on vine are much sweeter!!
& so unbelievably juicy!! =D

5. Heinz Baked Beans
S$1.40 per can.
I swear by Heinz for baked beans and ketchup.
They're the best!

6. First Choice Mini Romaine Lettuce
S$3.40 per box.
I get them for DIY Casear Salad when I have the craving.
They're sweet & crunchy! Better than NTUC's!

7. Sliced White Mushrooms
S$3.40 per tray. Pesticide-free.
I actually like them unsliced 'cos I like chewing on fat mushrooms.
But when I get lazy or if I don't think I can finish the bigger box, this is one to consider!

I found this Aunt Jemima brand from USA interesting.
Apart from another organic brand, this is the only brand of frozen waffles & pancakes that Cold Storage at Compass Point has.
"Made with REAL EGGS & MILK and other ingredients."
"Every batch made from scratch."

You mean, there's fake eggs & milk???
I'm guessing that they mean those pre-packed liquid eggs and/or milk powder?

I like that there are no preservatives, high fructose corn syrup and artificial flavours.
Everything about Aunt Jemima's sounds better than those Kellogs frozen pancakes (with high fructose & all) the Husband bought from NTUC.

I went to peek at their FB page.
They have 234,531 Likes!!
I also want for Tian Fen Lan!
Just 1% also can!

Apart from my Coca-cola & chips, I'm quite a health freak in buying food for the family.
Look! Organic extra virgin olive oil to stir fry the wild mushrooms with garlic and make scrambled eggs!
There's really a difference in taste!

I'm not one that adore spending a lot of time in the kitchen.
So towards the end of cooking, I squeezed my bowl of baked beans, sausages and pancakes together on the baking tray and shoved them in the oven. =D
Together with the tomatoes!
Slightly cooked tomatoes have better health benfits than eating them raw.

I love my toaster oven!
It has cooked so many meals for me while I busied myself at the stove!

I don't take maple syrup, so I replaced it with honey that I already have.
The premium mix of wild mushrooms I bought from Cold Storage are not those seen in the ingredient photo earlier.
They sell at S$4.95 per box and have a mix of 3 different mushrooms.
Pesticide-free & chemical-free!

I overfried the eggs, forgot to add milk in them and broke one pancake in this. =(

Another try another time!
I ran out of sausages so I used luncheon meat. Haha!
人要懂得變通!Like what my Buddhist teacher always says!
This time I added some Meiji milk in the eggs mixture before frying.
Looks better, don't they?

My HUMONGOUS breakfast platter!!! So colourful!!
With fresh milk and side dish!!

Made an effort to do proper plating for this 2nd try, as I wanted to snap photos for my blog.
Those years of working in SQ Business Class has also inculcated some decent food presentation skills in me.
=D

I estimate the cost to be about S$8 for this upsized version.
Easily 2 times bigger and it lasted me for 5 hours before I felt hungry again.
I would like to think I use better quality products too.

I was expecting the waffles and pancakes to be real sweet, since they're made in USA.
Surprisingly, they're not.
Far off from the sweetness of McDonald's pancakes.
You can add your own maple syrup or jam to up the sweetness.
Or if you like your food not too sweet, this is just great!

I used honey instead.

My favourite brand of honey from USA that my supplier recommended me!
Go google for Really Raw Honey! The feedback from consumers is amazing!
Pesticide-free!

I read that unproceesed honey has the best health benefits.
This is even better than the Manuka honey I used to lug back from New Zealand.
I drink a cup of warm honey everyday as it strengthens my heart too.
And also when I don't have time to eat.

I buy this 1.19kg version when Guardian has atrium fairs at shopping centres.
There will be 20% discount then.
In the pharmacies, you usually can only find half of this size.
But the bigger, the more value-for-money!
A honey shop at Takashimaya B2 sells it too.

Aaah...I miss my DIY brunches!
It's going to be a busy weekend!
Have a fabulous one, sweeties! =D
Be careful of rainy weather! Don't fall like me!
Can't wait to show you the bags coming up!

Jill rolls down the hill & Soup Restaurant

A couple of Thursdays ago, I had a Jack & Jill fall.

The downslope walkway was wet, it was raining, me not having a love for brollies and my parcel bags are all zipped and waterproof, so I happily went into the drizzling rain to hail a cab.

It was a very spectacular fall with an audience and sound effect (my futile screams).
Cars were turning out of the carpark and saw me 'in action', slipping and falling sideways on my big parcel bags.
One car driver even unwound his window and shouted across the drizzle,"ARE YOU OKAY?!"
Thank you, Mister! I was too embarrassed & forgot to thank you then!

The parcels are perfectly fine.
So are the gunny sack bags.

Me...

My battered legs

In black and white because I'm going to get giddy if I see fresh bloody wounds on my blog.
The pic was taken by the Husband an hour after my fall.
Disclaimer, those ugly pink slippers were bought by the Husband.
I couldn't wear mine after the fall.

To think just before I went out, the Husband was texting me to be careful of slippery roads with the thunderstorms.
He even called me to ensure I read his text.
I was like, oh what a nag!

The round wound on my foot knuckle was the worst.
Because just previously, I had injured the same area while trying to balance myself on one end of a shopping trolley at Cold Storage.
Don't ask me why I do that.
It must be due to stress.

So, a deep crater was formed at that spot and the wound is still sore half a month later.
My foot was slightly brusied & swollen to 2 times of its usual size.
I am a Big Foot! Since it's only 1 foot.
So for 2 weeks, it's one foot walk, one foot drag, one foot walk, one foot drag.
It was a torture to sweep the house and basically just about anything that requires me to stand and walk.
After 15 minutes, my wound will hurt and my foot will balloon.
There is a palm-sized blue-black on my hip.
For the first time ever, I learnt how to use those 鉄打酒!

That brings to mind how bad it must be for old people to trip and fall.
The pain they feel must be a zillion times worse than me!
Get them Crocs or something with great friction at the soles!
I see maids and children wearing something like Crocs and walking that cursed downslope walkway in the rain perfectly fine!

Got Frolick after posting to pamper myself.
Mango topping wasn't available that day.
I like Frolick Original with Oreo and mango bits.
Why hasn't a froyo store open at Sengkang yet?
I want to try Red Mango and Sour Sally, after hearing so much about them!

I thought the Frolick girl was suitable to be our model.
Pity her service was without smiles & warmth and she seemed a tad too eager to get back to her Blackberry once done serving me.
Her job must be boring her out for her to be so engaged with that.
Might be too haughty for my photoshoot team.
They cannot take it when the model walks in all high and mighty.
Hahaha!

Or maybe she wasn't impressed with my 落魄的樣子.
=D

And yesterday, while buying takeaway at Soup Restaurant, I saw this amazing year-end deal that the resturant is having for ALL its patrons!
Not just its shareholders!
Gosh, it's much better than those coupon deals where you sometimes act on kiasu-ism and have to pay first, before squeezing a time slot to use it.
For this, you don't have to pay first
And we all know Soup Restaurant serves decent food!

Source: http://www.souprestaurant.com.sg/promotion2.html

Go to the url above to print out the coupons! Or you can print out the ones you see in this entry!
Same!
With a minimum spending of S$30, you can present the coupon at participating branches to enjoy the great deals!
Imagine 1 free pot of soup! Soup Restaurant's soups are yummy!
(I wish they cut down on the msg tho, I'm slightly allergic to it)

The above coupons are valid EVERYDAY, even public holidays & weekends!

Remember to see carefully which branches are eligible before sashaying in.
Or it will be very embarrassing and you can't save $$!
And only 1 coupon per table!
So it's either free pot of soup or 50% discount off that Samsui Ginger Chicken!

No, you didn't read about my cheapskate idea here.
If you have a medium-sized group or bigger, I would suggest splitting tables to use more coupons.

Source: http://www.souprestaurant.com.sg/promotion2.html

For the Soup Restarants at AMK Hub, Compass Point and Clementi Mall, the coupons offer the same deals but can only be used from Monday-Friday, excluding public holidays.

OFFER FOR BOTH COUPONS END 23 DEC 2011!
Coupons only apply to dine-in.
Remember to read the fine print!

Not sure if you have tried but I really like their Stir Fried Kai Lan with Dang Gui.
You can taste the herbal taste and I love that!
At S$11+ a plate, eat all the Dang Gui like I do and get your money well-spent! =D

So delighted that I've a laser printer at home!
I'm going to see how many coupons I can squeeze on one A4-sized paper.

With more than a month before this promotion ends, 兄弟(if any) 姐妹們, let's eat away!!!

Working at 31,000 feet

This blog is hitting one year old soon.

Was never on my mind to write about being a Singapore Girl, a Flight Stewardess with Singapore Airlines.
I don't even have a suitable label for this entry.

In fact, I steer away from mentioning it too much.
Least I come across as being A.A. (attract attention).

Not till I got this question in my Formspring inbox 5 weeks ago.
Oh goodness, has it been 5 weeks??
So sorry for the wait, dear reader!

Occasionally, I see the topic of being an air crew being discussed on others' Formspring.
I guess being a stewardess is still the dream job for many.

Well, it was never my aspiration to be one.

Why did I become an air crew?

Back in 2001, the economy was not rosy and at the point of graduation, I had almost S$30K Tuition Fee Loan and student loan to pay off.
It was a struggle for my parents to put me through uni.
My mum suggested me to be an air crew.
Or join the police force.

I wanted to be a fashion merchandiser, but having a degree doesn't guarantee entry into the industry.

I wasn't in love with the idea of paying debts even after marriage.
A normal office job might not suffice.
So, not fascinated with the idea with physical training, I joined SQ.

Source: singaporeair.com

I wanted to quit once I'm done paying the debts.

So on 09 July 2001, I signed the contract to be a Singapore Girl.

What do I like about being an air crew?

While in SQ, I celebrated my first X'mas in London, had New Year's dinner in Seoul and Paris, and countdown in New York.
I shopped at H&M, GAP, Victoria's Secret, Abercombie and Forever 21, way before they opened in Singapore.
Plus more that haven't make their way into Singapore like Old Navy, American Eagle Outfitters.

During my flying days, I don't shop in Singapore at all.
Shopping overseas was more exciting.  Things were much trendier and afforable.
If I splurge on a branded bag in Europe, I get tax rebate that amount to a couple of hundreds.
If I purchase an entire set of Dermalogica products from LA, I would save 25% compared to buying in Singapore.

I have travelled to 90% of the destinations that Singapore Airlines fly to.
Many of these destinations are what I can only dream about if I held an office job.

Asia ~ Bangkok, Beijing, Fukoka, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Manila, Narita, Nagoya, Osaka, Shanghai, Seoul, Tokyo, Taipei
America ~ Los Angeles, Las Vegas (I went there with my friends from LA), New York, San Francisco
Australia & New Zeland ~  Adelaide, Auckland, Brisbane, Christchurch, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney
Europe ~ Amsterdam, Athens, Brussels, Cambridge (I travelled there from London with my buddy), Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Istanbul, London, Manchester, Milan, Paris, Rome, Zurich

And of course, there are locations that are not, erm, idealistic, but well, it's part of the job.

India ~ Ahmedabad, Delhi, Male, Mumbai
Africa ~ Abu Dhabi, Cairo, Dubai, Jeddah, Johannesburg

Yes, that means I have been to Disneyland, Magic Mountain, the Pyramids, the Little Mermaid, Eiffel Tower, London Bridge, Broadway, Hyde Park, the Bund, Shilin Night Market, Statute of Liberty, Forbidden City, Old Trafford, Hollywood, The Rock, the Blue Mosque, the Greek islands, Pantheon, Acropolis and more.

My fridge magnet collected from all the cities I flew to.

So, I covered 46 cities in my 6 years of flying.
That's an average of 7.5 new cities every year.
I'm not including those that the plane stopped only for a turnaround.
It's an awesome experience really. To have gone halfway round the globe.
If I am to clock that number of cities with my own money, I will either be very broke or very old by then.

Randomly, Singapore has the best and most well-rounded airport in the world!
Asia's newer airports like Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Seoul might also have the same glassy facade, but no other airport beats our Changi Airport!
That said, I really loved the parquet flooring at some parts of the Copenhagen Airport.
So Scandinavian, so Ikea!

I get a free air ticket to any destination every year.
But I have never used it.
Had wanted to transfer to one of my parents in the next year, but my parents are not keen.
So after I got married, the Husband got to travel with me.
He gets my free ticket plus he is also entitled to one himself annually.
He was on cloud nine when he got to go Old Trafford and Santa Monica.
To the Husband, it was like a never-ending honeymoon when I was a stewardess.

Free travelling aside, getting trained by the top airline in the world is one of the best things that ever happened to me.

SIA really put in A LOT OF EFFORT into training its software, that is, the cabin crew.
From the sentences an SQ girl is supposed to sprout, the facial expressions, the way we sashay down the aisles to how we say sorry in various situations, the School of Cabin Crew have it all down.
We were even taught self-defence.
It was a very intensive 4-month training for all of us.
There were tests every week, and if you flunk too many, you might never get a chance to don that sarong kebaya.
The training doesn't end after we become full-fledged stewardesses.
Throughout a year, we are often sent back for training and upgrading.

SIA is a darling for offering a wide range of free courses that we can opt to take during our off days.
E.g. conversational Japanese/Spanish/German/French/Mandarin, wine courses and many more that I can't remember.
If there's one thing I'm very proud of my days in SQ, it's the wonderful and enriching training that I received.
Both on ground and on board.

We might be portrayed as demure and gentle in ads, but we're all Wonder Women when the unglamourous part of the work set in!
It has trained me very well to think fast on my feet and conjure up a solution with whatever limited resources I have.
I've gotten quite adept at coaxing crying babies and pacifying vexed mothers who are travelling alone with their children.
To me, my colleagues are the most amazing air crew in the world.
The umpteen times they have shown me what quick thinkers they are and how creative they can be when it comes to providing top-notch service, I am humbled and impressed.

Just last Thursday, a friend spotted a well-known chef with a lady on a food magazine cover, at Cheers.
He turned around and asked me smugly for his name, thinking that I wouldn't know.
I didn't find it funny.

"Sam Leong. That's his Thai wife."
"Oh, so you know! Now let me test you, which F&B group does Sam Leong work for?"
"Tung Lok."
"Hey, you know that too!"
"Dude, Sam Leong is on the International Culinary Panel of SIA for years. You know I worked with SQ before, right?"

What do I dislike about flying?

Cabin crew barely get to choose when they want to be in Singapore.
Leave has to be planned about a year ahead.
It's by luck whether you get your choice of leave.

It can be your anniversary with your boyfriend, your grandmother's 81st birthday or the important gathering of your school mates.
If you don't manage to get an off day by swapping your flights, you just have to miss it.

Thinking of feigning illness and getting a MC?
Babe, MCs affect your record, which in turn affect your promotion and contract renewal chances.
Even if it's genuine.
That time of the month? You have to bear it and flash your radiant smile onboard.
If you're heartbroken or having some other emotional problem, don't ever let it show in front of passengers.
Getting a complaint from passengers is no joking matter.
You can go cry and sulk in the toilet but stay professional once you're on display.
You don't expect passengers to hear or see how unwell you are when they pay good money to get a seat on SIA.

It's not that you're not allowed to fall sick.
But if you're the kind that fall sick easily, you should consider twice about being an air crew.
Simple ailments like flu and cough will put you unsuitable for flight.
In my 6 years of flying, I have only taken sick leave twice.

I was trained for the ultra long-haul flights to States.
Fancy being stuck in an airplane for at least 18 hours?
When I hit the 15th hour, my mind starts going bonkers and pushing on is a matter of sheer mental work.

I have never been a fan of heavy makeup and perfectly coiffed hair, with lots of hairspray and hairgel holding it up.
But that is part of my uniform.
Perfectly coloured and polished nails are a must too for every flight.
From the time I put on my makeup to the time I removed it, it can be a mind-boggling 24 hours later.
Torturous.

With the volatile schedule every month, I can never sign up for any external courses and score perfect attendance.
For the Japanese course I took for 2 years, I photocopied more notes from my classmates than sitting in for lessons.
It's a miracle that I scraped through JLPT1.
I know of colleagues who did their degrees part-time and took study leave for exams.
But most big companies in Singapore and government bodies don't recognise such degrees.
That also means being in such a job, you don't get a high chance of upgrading your qualifications.
Unless you go on unpaid leave. But that is subject to approval.

In a month, I get about 10-11 off days.
Split between spending time with family, the Husband, friends, running personal errands, doing things I like and generally just rest time in between flights.
Half the time, I'm zoned out.
The long-time fatigue from doing flights caught on to me as I grow older.

Common ailments cabin crew have are back problems and gastric.
It's a job hazard.
Many of us underwent physiotherapy for our backaches.
I was lucky that it wasn't serious enough for me to lose my job.
There are also colleagues who still suffer from jet lag after 10 years of flying.

This is one of the most insightful questions I have ever received on my previous job.

We fly with a different set of crew every flight.
Different pilots, different supervisors, different colleagues amd of course, different passengers.
It's hard to strike any great friendship.
If you are looking for love, that depends on if you find cabin crew and pilots suitable since they are the ones you will have prolonged contact with.
If a passenger passes you a namecard onboard, flattering as it may be, you sometimes can't be sure if he is married, attached or single.

A smart Alec once commented on how he thought stewardesses to be of only girlfriend material and not worthy enough to be a wife.
It took a fair amount of self-restraint not to step on his feet with my stilettos.
I count myself lucky that the Husband's family did not judge me by my occupation.

Flying might be a dream job for many ladies but it cannot be considered as a long-term career.
As ladies, we can only work till 45 and the contract is renewed every 5 years.
So if the company hits a recession period during your 5th year, they might not renew your contract.
Plus, a stewardess has to quit once she gets pregnant.
No buts about it.
You can come back flying once you're ready, but it's up to the company whether they will take you back.
That also means you might be jobless for at least a year.

So remember, if you can get a degree before joining the airline, get it.
You get higher basic pay, which translates into more bonuses and CPF being contributed to your a/c.

Oh, and one more thing, buying Coca-cola is always 2-3 times more expensive than Singapore.

How did I cope with flying while being attached/married?

When I got together with the then-boyfriend-now-Husband, I was already a stewardess.
So the Boyfriend was pretty used to me not being around all the time.
He was sweet enough to send me off and pick me up from the airport every time I had to work.
He didn't have a car then.
That make him extra thoughtful and caring.

That said, I never like boys who enjoy nightlife like clubbing and partying into the late night.
I wouldn't feel secure if I'm not in Singapore.
Too much to worry.
Lucky the Boyfriend was the work-then-go-home kind.
When he meets his friends, he makes an effort to let me know beforehand and will always text me to inform me his location.
Be it whether I'm in Singapore or not.

He would spend at least a hundred dollars on calling cards to call me at my hotel rooms.
I still have a collection of all the phonecards he had used up!
Every day, we would talk for at least an hour.
Skype wasn't that stable then.
The Boyfriend was more than willing to spend that money.
Even in cities like Dubai, where the call is like S$1 per minute.
He never stinge on me.

No matter what time it is in Singapore, once I check in and text him the hotel number & my room number, within 5 minutes, the Boyfriend will call me and we will spend at least an hour catching up.

After we got married, we stayed with my in-laws for 3 years.
Out of which, the first 2 years, I was still flying.
I guess he doesn't feel the lonliness, as his parents and siblings were all living with him.
I have less of a worry too that he might cheat on me, since his mum is still there to watch over him.
So it's not like he can bring someone home when I'm out of town.
Hahaha!

I will text him liberally when I'm overseas, even if it's like 80cents per sms.
My bill comes up to about S$100+ every month.
To maintain close communication, spending money on autoroaming and overseas messages is definitely necessary.

Why did I quit flying?

I finished paying my NUS loans after about 4 years of flying.
Just before I got married. =)
Stayed on for the 5th year gratuity.

Wasn't quite sure what industry I should enter. I still have zero idea on how to get a headstart in the fashion industry. Though I did considered getting a visa to work for TopShop in London.
My buddy has gone into market research after her 3rd year and is doing well.
I contemplated applying for internal transfer with SIA HQ.
But my interest in the aviation industry is zilch.
Eventually, I quitted for a higher calling.

Oh well, life has a plan of its own and here I am blogging, as an owner of a bag blogshop. =P
Meeting new people and exploring new places repeatedly might sound fun.
But there comes a time when I just cannot leave Singapore anymore.
I just don't want to squash myself into the uniform, pin on my badge and do the SQ hair and makeup.
I got very weary of living out of a suitcase most of the time.
And believe it or not, travelling doesn't turn me on anymore.
All I wanted was to be around my family and friends and not to be thrown into a new environment everytime I leave for work.
It was getting too unstable to be etching out my livelihood in the air.

Ask any air crew who's on the verge of quitting and he/she will tell you the same thing.
We just don't want to pack that cargo bag anymore.
Before we leave Singapore, we are already thinking of the flight back.
Before we report for flight the next day, we are already dreading waking up for work and not being around again.
We just cannot take it not being in Singapore for X'mas Eve and Chinese New Year, anymore.

From the first year of flying, I wish I am in a job where I can contribute more.
Not just being in the front line, fighting fires as they come.
A career that can utilise all the skills and knowledge I possess.
Not just looking good, carrying out the service flow and making small & forgettable conversations with strangers that I probably will never meet again.

I quitted when I was 27.
I did not want to look back on my twenties and felt that I had spent it all only at being an air stewardess.
Shouldn't my twenties be more exciting than travelling for free?
Shouldn't my twenties be more defining than an iconic sarong kebaya?
I dream of being a career woman when I was schooling.
Not a uniformed air waitress.

I am grateful for all the experiences that I gained in SQ and that it helped me pay off my school loans faster than my peers.
At the very least, it helped me answer that silly question from my guy friend.
Nah, to be honest, if I didn't have the composure and service attitude SQ drilled into me, I would be less able at managing Tian Fen Lan and fending off shoppers with unreasonable/greedy requests.

Even if I can't find a job now, I will never go back to flying.
I didn't enjoy the travelling and the work itself.
Cool as it sounds, most of the sight-seeing was actually done with minimal sleep and a jet-lagged body.
It's really more fun to be travelling with your loved ones and with more time on your hand, instead of the 1-1.5 off days we have outstation.
I am no fan of soccer, but when I travelled to Old Trafford with the Husband, his joy and excitement were contagious.
When I first brought him to Santa Monica, the place suddenly felt so much more fun and romantic with him around.

Some things to think about

If you can get a degree before joining the airline, get it.
You get higher basic pay, which translates into more bonuses and CPF being contributed to your a/c.
CPF is only deductible from our basic pay and not the allowances.
That means your CPF will be much lower than your peers.
So save up all the cash! Don't go crazy on LVs, Guccis or Chanels!
Load up on the cash and buy a condo for rental income next time!
So much more worth it!

Being an air crew, you need a high degree of independence.
While overseas, you sometimes have to travel alone, eat alone, shop alone and even go sightseeing alone.
Everyone have different itineraries when overseas.
Some colleagues just want to sleep in due to fatigue & jet lag. Some go visiting friends/relatives.
Some want to shop in a different part of the city. Some want to study for their exams.
Some just want to rot in their rooms with HBO and Star TV.
If you can't find someone that you can clique with, you're better off alone, instead of struggling to make patronising talk the entire time you're outstation.

Have an exit plan ready.
Many come into the airline, giving themselves 2 years.
Then, they end up staying on for 10 years or more.
People say flying is relatively stress-free, compared to outside jobs.
Yes, if you exclude all the homework that you are supposed to read up before every flight.

People expect the Singapore Girl to be well-versed in her company and its offerings.
I once had a Singaporean man coming up to ask me who the CEO and Chairman of SIA were.
I don't know why he has the urge to know that, in the middle of a long flight.
Or a passenger can ask you what's the difference between First Class, Business Class and Economy Class wines.
It's not like I can tell him straight in the face, "You pay for what you get." without sounding rude.

Tests pop out of nowhere on every other flight.
As SQ cabin crew, we have to be very alert and aware while working.
Also because the company takes passenger complaints VERY seriously.

In my training batch, a handful of us were NUS/NTU graduates.
We were saying how we wanted to have bigger career dreams beyond flying and how flying was just a temporary solution/aspiration for us.
But guess what, one of my batch girls is getting her 10-year gratuity this year.

Time flies when you are flying.
Go for a long flight, come back and 1 week just flew by.
Know what you want to achieve from flying.
It's a very tiring job and we worked very hard to earn the money we bring home.
Don't waste your time inside and have no savings when you quit the airline.

Plan for your future and what you want to do after SIA.
Don't go thinking the gratuity is a lot.
It is CPF & tax deductible.
A supervisor once told me if he had the chance to relive his life again, he will never want to fly for 25 years.

Whichever job you may be in, I hope it doesn't happen to you too.
Not when it's not your dream job.

Tell you something else, I didn't and still don't know how to swim or tread water.
It wasn't a criteria to know to how to swim.
For the last interview round, we're supposed to jump from a 1-2m height into a 2-3metre pool.
We were all to wear life vests, be it we know how to swim or not.
Totally freaked out and kept thinking I'm going to drown.
A couple of girls backed out.
I had come so far and wasn't ready to back down.
So JUMP, I did!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Being a blogshop owner is definitely more pressurising and taxing than being a stewardess.
Every day, every other moment, I'm thinking about improving Tian Fen Lan.
But although I'm sloughing my guts out as the owner of Tian Fen Lan, I'm so much happier and fulfilled!
I only wish I started earlier!

I hope this entry helps clarify some doubts for you readers who aspire to be a Singapore Girl.
It's not all rainbows, fluff and cotton candy working for SIA.
If you're looking for easy money, being a SQ cabin crew is not for you.
The top airline in the world doesn't get there by being a slacker.

I think I never left school

When I was a kid, there was Enid Blyton's The Naughtiest Girl series.

I liked the lead character so much that I signed off as Elizabeth in my friends' autograph books.

When I was in uni, there was JK Rowling's Harry Potter series.

I wish I have the brains of Hermonie.

Now that I'm all grown up and married, there's Ryan Murphy's GLEE series.

And there's Warblers.

Bashful schoolboys in ties & blazers, suave dance numbers, spontaneous breaking out into songs.
The Warblers are going to be classic TV history in years to come.

Randomly, the ties remind me of my schooling days.
I have to wear a striped school tie everyday from Sec 1 to JC2.

What they say about Taureans being stubborn faithful to the things they like must have some truth in it.

Life comes in a full circle. Again.

Life in a full circle

Doing up a new launch in the middle of the night again.
Can't help but laugh at the similarities between my current work and my previous job.
And also a short preview to my promised air crew post.

When people are enjoying their public holidays, I'm working.
When people are sleeping, I'm working.
When people are having fun travelling & buying stuff, I'm working.
I am still in the service line.
I still have irregular meals.
I still have crazy sleeping patterns.
I still drink Coca-cola to stay awake.
I still have to work even if I'm sick, heartbroken or having that time of the month.
I still say a lot of 'thank you' and 'sorry'.
It's always customers first. No matter how 'unique' they may be.

I still go to the airport for work, once in a while.
Because the Post Office there closes at 930pm, even on weekends and public holidays.

Both jobs look glamourous on the outside.
So most people won't believe that I work like mad to earn that bit of money.
It's all about visual appeal for both jobs.
No one cares if I have a PhD in aeronautical engineering or a diploma in gardening.

My passengers include teenagers, working ladies, housewives and mothers.
Just like TFL's customers.

Here's more similarities, disguised in the form of differences:

I used to wear a uniform. Now my PJs are like my uniforms.
I used to move luggages and heavy trolley carts. Now I'm moving bags. Same.
The Husband used to ferry me to and from the airport. Now he has to ferry my stocks on and off.

It used to be me wearing a smile on my face. Now it's about me inserting emoticons. =)
It used to be about me looking good. Now it's about having good-looking models.
It used to be strangers asking me why I work as an air crew when I have a business degree.
Now it's my parents asking me why I open a blogshop when I have a business degree.

Erm, can someone remind me again why I quitted my previous job?

添芬藍三嵗了!

3 years ago, on this very auspicious day picked by my geomancer,
Tian Fen Lan unveiled its first collection on Blogspot. =)

Gosh, amazing that 3 years fly past just like that!

That means I have been living with my stocks, envelopes (hundreds of them), oppt tapes, markers (I've boxes of them!) and all the other barangs for 3 years!

2011 has been a year of hits and misses.
I felt that I didn't bring TFL up to higher grounds as I wish in last year's post.
Yet, there were so many unbelivable opportunities that came knocking on TFL's inbox!

So here's a quick recap of what TFL has been up to from last Nov till now!

That's TFL's 1st media feature in Nov 2010, thanks to Lifestyle magazine and its feature writer, Rachel Xie!

It was a great way to start TFL's 3rd year and it was a sign of many more good things to come!

After a 7-month hiatus from manufacturing, TFL launched her very first pair of shoes in Matte Champagne & Matte Silver, inspired by a previous pair I bought from Charlotte Russe at Los Angeles!

My mum and my mum-in-law have a pair each!

Then, the bags came in just in time for CNY! Took me months, but I was really happy to find this new bag manufacturer!

I remember the photos for the bags were done at a new studio, not our usual studio as the photographer was away or something. Gaah, that threw me into a ball of frenzy! I was worried how the quality would turn out and whether the customers would be used to it. Thank goodness, everyone loved the bags!

For the first time ever, TFL offered a courier delivery option for customers who wanted their loots in time for the Lunar New Year. It was the busiest festive period I have ever experienced!

Every night, I would be madly packing into the wee hours, sorting out parcels for SingPost mailing and courier delivery. Every morning, I had to wake up at between 8-9am to call the courier. Such a challenge when I have slept at 5plus am. I would go into a frenzy when they failed to turn up on time to pick up the parcels. Every day was like operating on a time bomb!

So mad busy and fizzed out that honestly, I could have just slept in on Chinese New Year itself!
I remember my house was still in a mess on that all-important first day. Luckily no one came for visitations. They were all barred. Haha!

The dress on the left came in 4 colours and was the first collaboration with the piggies. It was a very rushed decision, which wasn't very well-planned, I must say.

But on a happier note, I really love the booties!
The Peeptoe booties in Khaki Nude and Black and the Peter Pan booties in Black & Chocolate!
Selling shoes are really not easy. Just storage alone is a big headache.
My mum still thinks they are very weird-looking shoes. =D
But look how well Miyake carries them off!

What followed after was 2 straight months of no new launch at all.
I was too busy to handle all the samples pouring in before CNY and the China factories were closed for 2 weeks during CNY.
That affected my Taiwan supplier too.
TFL only survived on backorders and selling whatever that was instock then.

It wasn't TFL's 1st CNY, but it was definitely the busiest.
Doing it all alone also means missing out on things sometimes.
I badly under-planned for the drought in new stocks post-CNY.
Coupled with delays here and there, the next launch was in May.
Can't believe it!
But no worries, I have learnt my lesson and am already stocking up on pretty bags now, in preparation for the festive period and the drought after that!
This year's CNY is so early! Don't like!

Because I was so free during March and April, I finally had the time to do up the 100+ photos submitted by customers during last Nov's promotion.
Took me days because the pics were all in various sizes. Should have specified a size.
It is a really very nice feeling to see how customers have been pairing the bags and all the places that TFL bags have been going to.
To actually put a face to the thousands of emails I have handled, it's an indescribable fuzzy feeling of warmth.

I'm looking forward to the day when customers will tweet/email/FB photos of themselves with TFL bags to TFL.
It is really very thrilling to see the end product on a happy customer.
I was just talking with the piggies the other day, on how every launch, we gave it our all.
Be it whether the customers like and buy anything or not, there is no discount in the effort we put in.
Selecting the stocks, preparing them for the shoot, burning the midnight oil to edit the photos, spending hours at the laptop invoicing and replying emails, dealing with the happiness/disappointment of a launch and before you know it, the whole process starts all over again in a week's time.

The Husband was asking why I would feel disappointed when certain bags or a launch did not do as well as I hoped.
He said I should have been used to it by now, after a gruelling 3 years.
I told him, it's just like marriage.
Just because we are married for half a decade doesn't mean taking things for granted.
Just because we are married doesn't mean we should do less for each other.
I still like surprises. I still crave for assurance. I still hope for a stronger love.
Hmm, does this analogy any sense to you?

I have been cracking my head on what a great promotion for TFL's 3rd birthday will be.
Had wanted to do something when the dotcom is up.
I had hoped for it to be up on TFL's birthday.
Oh well, I think it should still make it by end Nov.
*crossing all my fingers and toes*

This was a total surprise for TFL to be featured on CLEO April's issue!
Thank you CLEO, Kelly & Cheryl!
Knew of it when I see orders coming in from customers who said they knew of TFL through CLEO.
It was the issue during my birthday month! Brilliant!

I finally got to realise my dream of doing a cafe shoot at Flor in May with TFL's new manufactured bag!
The photos came out beautiful! A real-life setting is so great at showing how TFL bags will be like on the customers, when they go shopping, eating with friends etc.
Flor is so kind to have the crew in!
I'm really hooked to outdoor shoots.
But it wasn't possible to do it for the usual launches of imported bags.
Too many bags, too little time.
My web designer was saying that outdoor shots would look messy on the new dotcom, compared to studio shots.
So we can only do that as a lookbook thing from now on.

This year's May definitely had a moment of triumph for me!
Tianfenlan.com had been taken by a China guy for 2 years.
I have no idea why.
Did he think I would make him rich by buying from him?
Hey, even the BonitoChico girls opted to switch to Love Bonito when their domain was taken and the guy demanded for US$20k.
Such audacity of these people to want to leech on our years of hard work!

And on a pretty Sunday morning in June, the Shin Min article finally got published!
Thank you, Shin Min & Agnes!
I was a bunch of nerves getting interviewed for the first time.
Did it mainly because it's my parents' favourite newspapers.

It was fun honestly though I don't think I wanna go through it again.
Too much of an introvert. =P

Another TFL Label bag launched around June!
My favourite TFL bag to date! Not a commonly found style!
The checkered inner lining is really beautiful, but its similarity to Burberry's got the shipment held up at Customs for a while.
So that's the last time I will be using the lining. =(

Manufacturing bags is really a tedious process.
Pouring over the colour swatches, the inner linings, the metalware, using the bag and constantly running through various scenarios customers will face and trying to tailor the bag to suit their needs better.

Staying on top of TFL's work also means lugging the laptop and all related stationery (delivery pad, big calculator, my Uniball ballpoint pen, notebook) overseas even when it's just a 3-day-2-night trip.
It's too scary to open an inbox after a long absence.
Not everyone will care where you have been and why.
That's part of the job 'benefit'. =P

My wedding photographer did this beautiful shoot of Millie Cross Tote at Forty Hands Cafe.
It was also TFL's first time working with Francesca.
Thank goodness everything turned out well, for a set of crew who were working together for the first time!

My Taiwan supplier dropped the bomb in mid-May that they were no longer accepting overseas order.
I had all but 2 weeks to scramble and find new suppliers.
It was always on my mind to have a network of suppliers instead of relying on just one.
But I got so busy that this notion was constantly shelved.

I did panicked.
New suppliers mean new bag styles and material.
Will the customers like them?
Will they be used to seeing photos of local studio shoots, instead of the Taiwan photos?

Changing suppliers also mean an increase in cost.
The new bags are better in material & hardware, hence costing more.
There are no more supplier's photos for me to use.
I have to share photoshoot costs with the piggies.
Really count my lucky stars (there must be many!) that the piggies are able to help out with the shoot logistics.
Moving 20 pieces of clothes is one thing.
Moving 20+ bags is another.
I now have to spend 2 hours plus stuffing the bags and hooking up their straps, in preparation for the shoot.
And spend some time undoing that after the shoot.

With my life already running on a tightrope, it took me a while to adjust to operating
in a new environment, with new schedules and procedures to get a launch out.
At that time, I really wish I had someone trustworthy to rough it out all with me.
You know, like how the other blogshop owners have sisters, friends, parents and boyfriends/husbands helping them out.
Like 全民縂動員.

But my Buddhist teacher is always reminding me, if you want to do it, just do it.
Don't grumble.
If you want to grumble, then don't do it.
Or you will never be happy with anything.
要做就不要埋怨。
要埋怨就不要做。
And don't bite off more than what you can chew.
Wise words. =)

Finally launched TFL Facebook Fan Page in July!
Doing TFL has pushed me to pick up new technologies and skills and apply them to my business faster than I usually would.
E.g. learning how to use Gimp, Blogger, Photobucket, Twitter and Facebook.
All those painful nights. Haha!

Randomly, in the website draft, my web designer puts in a figure of 284 for the Facebook Like widget.
That draft was months ago and TFL Fan Page was not even launched.
I think she must have supernatural power to know that it will be around that figure when the site is launched.

Looking forward to the day when TFL crosses the 1,000 mark!

The first launch of bags from new suppliers in July.
It was a point of no return. =)
No more going back to the Taiwan supplier.
So much more fun with the new suppliers.
It opens up a whole new range of bags that TFL has never sold before!
I get an adrenalin rush everytime I see new designs!

This was also the first collection that I started the Facebook Fan Page S$1 discount promotion, in a bid to gather more 'Likes'.
A number of customers took some time to get the steps right though but it is getting so much better now!

The arrival of Luggage Totes by Tian Fen Lan!

My web designer likes it and bought her first bag from TFL!
The photos don't do them justice!

With the site coming up, I have also stopped doing backorders.
That means less income for sure.
But also more time for housechores. Hehe.

Somewhere in September onwards, I started to bring in new items, apart from bags & shoes.

There's necklaces!

And hats!

These are not new things that have never been sold by a blogshop before.
But when building a business from scratch, every little thing is a milestone.
Even setting up a Facebook Fan Page or selling a chunky necklace for the very first time.
I never know for sure how receptive customers will be to something new.
So I tend to get nervous even when taking baby steps.
But never try, never know, right?
=)

It always feels surreal to see the final product arriving in the hundreds.
And all because I chose to manufacture it.
For the better or for the worse. Haha!
It used to take longer to finish selling a manufactured bag.
But from 2011 onwards, the time taken is significantly shorter by half.
It is so great that I no longer have to rely on bloggers to push up sales.
I always feel lucky when customers buy TFL Label bags.
It's like their way of telling me that they agree with my taste in bags too. =))

My first try at using scrapbook bits to do up a TFL montage!
Like I mentioned earlier, picking up new skills along the way is really essential for any blogshop owner!
No one will be able to teach you.
You have to figure out yourself!

This year, TFL also receives emails from clothing blogshops about collaborations, offers of various retail rack spaces at the city of Singapore, international shopping sites based locally and more.
It is very exciting and I feel honoured to have the chance and expand TFL's reach.
Given that all this started from me having nothing.

Sadly, I have to give up all the fabulous opportunities that came tumbling in.
My reply was always me having too many stuff on my platter and unable to do more.
It can be very 捶心肝 when the opportunity I gave up turned into a very profitable venture after all.

Oh well, I console myself that it's best to do something when I fully have the capacity to.
If not, I might just stress myself (and the Husband) to death.
I want to stay happy running Tian Fen Lan.

From Series 48 onwards, I have been trying to keep up with weekly launches.
Already, that means burning my weekends sometimes, just to get everything out on time.
For most blogshops that have been around for 3 years, they would have hit at least 100 collections by now.
TFL is still at her 57th.
I'm hoping my time on the laptop, be it replying mails or editing photos, will be cut by half when the dotcom is up.
There are really so many more things I wish to explore for TFL!

As my network of suppliers grows stronger, I now have access to so
many more bag styles I never had before.
Such a liberating feeling!

This Sammi Tote you see on me sells at S$33 on TFL's site, with postage included.
I saw the same design of a material that's not better than TFL's selling at S$49.90 at Hougang Mall.

Bags are really one of the more expensive things to buy, compared to clothes.
I remember seeing this local brand (can't remember the name) starting with M,
selling bags when I was in JC. Not sure if it is still around.
Back then, it was very tough to find nice bags at affordable prices.
Bugis Village was not so happening.
This Fashion just came into the shopping arena.
I was harbouring the dream of having my own boutique and told myself if I had a shop, I would make sure I sell bags at affordable prices so that even undergrads can find a suitable bag for school.

As TFL embarks on the beginning of her 4th year today, I hope to continue building this dream!
To my beloved customers, thank you for opening up a whole new world for me!
添芬藍三嵗了!
添芬藍萬歲!

It is getting more often for me to see TFL Label or imported bags on the streets nowadays.
You have no idea how much joy that brings me, especially when I'm having a bad day. =))

Someone was telling me even if my shoppers never say anything and also never buy anything,
that itself is already a feedback.
How true!
For all the praises, feedback, concern and even complaints that you have provided, I'm really grateful to you all!
Thank you!! =DD

More pretty bags for all of us!!!

欣雨 Xinyu
