My love & hate relationship with my skin - Part 1

I was born with perfect skin.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
When I was a baby.

There was never a worry about having bad skin days.

Then when I hit puberty, my skin started having a mind of its own.
I have to go to school with huge pimples on my nose.
They just like growing there in the middle of the night, complete with pus in it.
Oh, gross!

It does feel great squeezing them out, but I realise that if I do not have anything suitable to apply on the 'open wound', the pus will come out again, like lava from a erupting volcano!
Oxy does not work on me. Watsons then do not carry so many products like now.

I eventually got to see a doctor for my temperamental skin and was on antibiotics for about a year.
The medication cleared the skin rapidly, but not long after I stopped, the problem resurfaced, literally.
I have heard about the side effects of being on such prolonged medication and no way am I going back to medication.

It was a treacherous road to find suitable skin care products, when I was on a student budget.
I'm not the kind who can afford to buy something, only to chuck it if it's not so fantastic and then buy another one.
Skincare products from Watsons generally do not work on me. I have high-maintenance skin.
Woe, be on me. =(

When I started my first job, I survived on basic pay for 1st 4 months of training, which was utterly miserable.
I had to spend tons of moolah on makeup, winter wear, luggage etc.
實在真的有夠沮喪的。
The allowance that finally tumbled in on the 5th month onwards went to overseas sightseeing & food.
 實在真的有夠窮的咯!
It's very demoralising to go to work with less than perfect skin, open pores (the favourite breeding area of my ex-pimples) and a blackhead-filled nose.
Yes, make-up does wonders but when I am surrounded by colleagues of heavenly skin that look expensive & well-maintained, it left me seething with envy.
The basic point is:
Make-up looks best on good skin!

I start to shamelessly ask pretty colleagues about their skincare & makeup routine, on almost every flight I am on.
One of the brands that is most recommended was Dermalogica, a USA brand.

In Singapore, only Leonard Drake Skin Centre carries it.
I was on their facial programmes for 1 whole year. During that time, my entire skincare routine consists of only Dermalogica products.
I was bought over by the myth that "Oh, you should use all of the same skincare brand for maximum results!"
Rubbish!

I do not buy the products in Singapore, but in Los Angeles when I flew there. Prices are cheaper by 10-20%!

And you know what?
After spending thousands of dollars on the facial programmes & the skincare products, I realise Dermalogica doesn't work for me as well as for most of my colleagues. =(((

Why Dermalogica does not work for me:

1) It contains lavender in most of its products, and the creams & lotions smell heavenly because of that. But I realise that lavender causes small little bumps on my skin.

I was so 'on' about skin care that I even signed up with a mailing list from USA that teaches its readers about skincare ingredients. I read an article about the side effects of lavender in skincare, stopped using the products with it, and my skin cleared up!

So if you are having mysterious breakouts, do check out the ingredients in your skincare. It might just be one particular ingredient that your skin dislikes.

2) Its cleansers are too harsh for me. I have used UltraCalming™ cleanser, Special cleansing gel & Essential cleansing solution.
I have combination skin slightly on the dry side. They make my skin flake and I have to go to work with peeling skin. It was hideous!
Initially, I thought it was due to the dry wintry conditions or cabin air that caused it.
I even bought the Super Rich Repair moisturiser and Evian spray to counteract the flakiness on board.
Imagine how silly I feel when I realised the cleansers were the culprits!
To add salt to the wound, I bought those cleansers in those huge 500ml bottles that came with pump dispenser. $$$$!
I think I gave all of it to my sister or Jo.

3) After 1 year of dedicated use and facial, I see no improvement.
I have tried the cleansers, moisturisers, masques, boosters, eye treatments, sunscreens & exfoliants.
Every facial, major extractions still have to be done. Although the beauticians would say "Oh, your skin is much better than last time", "You used to have so many clogged pores", I honestly can't see the effect.

The only 2 products from Dermalogica that I still use now are:

Daily Microfoliant

Credit: www.dermalogica.com

Subsequently, a colleague introduced me to another facial place at Tampines by a lady called Karen.
I was in awe of the colleague's skin. She was 36, but I thought she was only 30-31 years old!
Then she told me that she did IPL & Microdermabrasion at Karen's beauty parlour.
Karen also uses Dermalogical products, but it's the treatments that revamped my colleague's skin.
I was sold, completely.
Karen taught me to use the Daily Microfoliant in the morning, as it is a good way to remove dead skin when your skin is not so clogged from the daily makeup/sebum.
And it works! =D

From then on, I have never done normal facials. It is always aesthetic treatments.
I think when we ladies start to reach mid-20s, normal facials just don't work anymore.
Unless you are the kind who sleep very regular hours (before 11pm) and eat steamed, non-fried, healthy food for moisturised skin like the HK actresses, aesthetic treatments are very crucial for skin maintenance.

Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque

I like that Karen is not pushy. Although she will recommend the kind of products I should use, she is not a hardseller.
She taught me to leave this masque for about an hour, and while just before washing it off, I should massage it into my skin.
My skin looked more radiant, after I started doing the little massage.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My team girl, with rosy & porcelain skin, introduced me to the DrX clinic.
No, it wasn't DrX that gave her that kind of skin. She was born with it. But everyone need to maintain, right?

And seriously, this is, like, the BEST anti-pimple/blackhead/clogged pores product I have ever used!

Introducing my skin miracle: DrX Comedone Formula!

My first visit to DrX Clinic was about 6-7 years ago and consultation was done by Dr Lee.
I remembered spending about $400-500 on the skincare products, while the consultation was around S$50?
At that time, there was this big splatter of small pimples on my forehead.
No matter how many facial extractions were done ( by Leonard Drake), they KEPT returning! 氣死我了!
Within 2-3 weeks of using the Comedone Formula, the pimple splatter cleared up and not a scar was left!
My blackhead-prone nose also looked much clearer. If any pore is clogged, I would use the round end of a black hairpin to press the annoying blackhead out, apply CF on it and it will heal nicely!
It was also much easier forcing the impurities out, ever since I started using CF.
Once, a blackhead on my cheek came out on its own accord, after I applied CF on it. But that was only once. Haha!

My sister-in-law has skin that is acne-prone and the Blemish Forumla helps clear up her cheek areas, just in time for her wedding!

Another guy friend had this sudden angry pimple breakout under his chin. Each pimple was the size of a 1-cent coin and purplish in colour. The pimples cover the whole surface area of his lower chin. I bought 1 bottle of the Comedone Formula and the area is 'sparklingly clear' in about 3-4 weeks.

Science is amazing.

I also bought the Lightener and the Non-tinted Sunscreen.

The Lightener was to lighten the freckles on my cheeks.
I don't find it useful for that, but it sure makes my skin fair. And I like it!
Think of it like a skin whitener!
The downside is that it contains 4% Hydroquinone. Karen told me that hydroquinone can cause skin sensitivity. I used it for at least 2-3 years. Nothing bad happened. Just fairer skin!
When I wanted to buy it again after a 1-2 year hiatus (I was too poor to afford it =( ), the doctor recommended me Arbutin-R Cream (non-Hydroquinone) instead. The lightener is only available through prescription and the doctor said over prolonged usage, the lightener can cause skin to darken instead.
Aww, how sad, after I finally found a whitening product that works for me!

I do like the Non-Tinted Sunscreen. It is only at S$50, I think and it lasts me half a year with daily usage. Best of all, it does not clog my pores.

But I have since found an even better sunscreen that I will blog about in the next post. This post seems pretty lengthy. =P

I have also tried the Chira Wash, Vit-A Gel, and some of the moisturiser. Make no difference to me, so I'm only using the Comedone Formula & the Non-tinted Sunscreen.

If you have clogged pores and have not found any great solution, you can consider paying DrX clinic a visit. The products cannot be bought over the counter, like in department stores, for first-timers. A consultation with the doctors is required for a proper assessment of the skin, before products are recommended. But no worries, they are not pushy!

Took me a few days to write this post. Okay, back to the emails! =D

添芬藍 Series 42 - Peter Pan Booties!

Photo credits: Steve Madden, original price - US$89.95

This may or may not look familiar to you.
But cut away a portion of the front, replace the conical heel with a slimmer heel, use sleek patent material
and you will have this:
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Peeptoe Booties by Tian Fen Lan, S$33 with postage

I thought this looks sexier than the original version I saw from Steve Madden's website.
Reminds me of something that Catwoman will wear.
p.s. the heels will really hurt someone, if you have to do some kick-ass action with it. Haha! =D

Well, except that Michelle Pfeiffer (whom I think played Catwoman best) wore knee-high boots in the movie.

Then I saw this and got all hyper!
I think that's always the case for blogshop owners looking for manufacturing inspirations and hit jackpot when they stumbled onto something.

Photo credits: Steve Madden, original price - US$129.95

實在真的有夠美咯!
I was bowled over, excitedly turned my laptop to face the Husband and gushed about this design.
Only to meet with a 白板臉.
He saw the photos, looked at my earnest face and asked, "Why do you always like things that are so weird?"

WEIRD?? WEIRD MEH??
You see the textured, distressed like patent PVC? You see the ingenious fringe flap in front?
You see the frontal perforation for non-sweaty feet? You see the heart-shaped cut-out in front?
And the finishing knot to add on to the quaint/vintage look?
WHERE GOT WEIRD?? So CUTE to the max!
It's STEVE MADDEN, you know!!

Then he said, "I think you should just stick to simple designs. The previous oxfords look better."
He was referring to the original inspiration for the Peeptoe Booties.

But cannot be always just simple designs! Customers will get bored!
And how many basic designs can I sell when those BIG blogshops have already done a zillion of such shoes?

Dear, I think we have a compatibility problem. -__-

So anyway, I was staring at the 2nd pair of oxfords for the longest time ever.
It always take me eons to decide on what to manufacture.
I want to make it better than the original.
I want it to be more wearable for local gals.
I don't want to just copy wholesale. Okay, no guarantee on that, but I try. =P
I don't want to realise that I don't like it after all and abandon a sample, after my suppliers painstakingly get it done for me.
I don't want to appear fickle-minded to my suppliers and have a bad name.
So when I decide on what to manufacture, I zoom into the details and write lengthy emails/notes to my supplier, at the expense of replying customers' emails sometimes. =}

I have never met my suppliers before.
The Husband meet them instead, as last year TFL work wore me out so much that my heart problem aggravated.
Eating a simple lunch or bathing will have me panting breathlessly.
I couldn't walk too far or talk too much, without feeling that my heart is going to give way.
Packing parcels and moving stock really tested my grit then. Sounds so drama huh?
Thank goodness I have a Postboy to help out! He is a hardworking boy!
I still feel breathless and then but all is fine better now though. =)

So being detailed in my emails & notes is really necessary to get things done right.
I'm a meticulous slow thinker. I take about 2-3 hours just to write an email or a 2-paged note, worrying that I would miss out on some important detail.
You know how some crucial realisation might strike you when you are discussing about something with someone?
I won't have the luxury of that, since there's no one I can discuss with and so I talked to myself. -__-
It's vital that I get things right the first time, to prevent hassles caused to my suppliers too.
The Husband doesn't know much about what's going on in Tian Fen Lan, so it's not like he can make decisions for me unless I start selling men's clothes. Haha!
He's just there to convey the message for me and get the samples & colour charts from the suppliers.
He's really a great help! Knowing that I can't be there in person, the suppliers are really kind to me too! =D

Back to the oxfords!
I don't see many girls wearing oxfords, though they were touted as the next 'flats' when back in vogue 1-2 years ago.
Maybe it's too manly for local girls or the design is just not that popular? Not even our guys wear oxfords.
I, on the other hand, had been lemming for one pair since late 2009.
No blogshop was selling it, neither were the local shoe stores. My Taiwan supplier had it, but not in my big-foot size. =((
So it was a matter of time before I manufacture it, so that I can wear it!
Having done the Peeptoe Booties with a taller & slimmer heel, I decided to use the conical heel from the 1st inspiration on this oxford.
Chunky heels are a great alternative to stiletto heels!
They are less tiring for the legs, easier to balance, less formal & well, I'm trying to do something different here. =)

Tadah! Peter Pan booties by 添芬藍 at S$33, postage included!
Trust me, they look even better in real life.

When I first saw the fringe flap, I thought of Peter Pan. But googling for images of the boy, this came up.

So the shoes that Peter Pan wears do not resemble the TFL booties at all.
I did not even make it in that colour.
But I could not think of a better name (I'm terrible at it) and the name has stuck since I saw the Steve Madden photos.
So Peter Pan, they shall be. =D

Totally thrilled when blogger Miyake likes TFL's Peter Pan booties and look at the gorgeous photos she has taken!
I wonder how she took a shot like that. It's as if she's floating in the booties.
Hmm..now that reminds me of walking on Air Nike. Haha!
實在真的有夠專業咯! How creative! =D

Looks even better than my studio pics, huh?
If Miyake freelances as a photographer+stylist, blogshops are so going to flock to her like bees to honey.
I'll be the first in queue, together with the piggies. =DD

The Peter Pan booties have been launched! So see you at tianfenlan.blogspot.com!

Because I realise my previous homepage montages will never see the daylight once a new item is up, I'm going to slap it on my blog, so that the hours of squeezing my brain juices & killing my brain cells will not go down the drain. =D

吾的情人節禮物

After a year plus of nagging, the Husband finally got me one.
My 1st portable hard disk!

Called him the other day and he was at Funan, getting something for his customers. It was my lucky day!
The other time he was at a computer shop and all he could remember was getting a hard case for his IPad. -__-
I had been pestering him to get a portable hard disk for me ever since my previous desktop was on the verge of breaking down.
I panicked at the thought of losing all my files & pictures for TFL's work.
He kept forgetting (so did I) and once, when I had to use his hard disk, it has a Trojan! Yikes!

There was only Matte Black, glossy Hot Pink & some other neon colour to choose from.
I like Hot Pink, but a glossy surface will mean scratches.
So Matte Black then!

But gasp! I didn't know portable hard disks are so expensive! I thought it would be less than S$80!
He was trying to tell me how good the brand was, the free (but ugly, imho) pouch, the 5-year warranty. 500 GB of storage (I don't know how to tell if it's a lot) and so on...blah blah blah.
I nodded my head, but all those technical terms didn't quite register in my brain. =D

When he came home, he gave me the receipt, saying that maybe I might want to file it under TFL's expenses.
But I never pay him back.
Thou shalt claim it as my V-day present! Because on that day, he only gave me a packet of KFC Cheese Fries. Hmphf!

金兔迎春,喜洋洋!

Was asking Jo for some inspiration on this post title and he said, "Huat ah!"
沒水准。-__-

Pre-CNY
Mum-in-law was baking pineapple tarts so intensively that her 20-year old oven finally gave way and a new one was bought the next day. Last I heard, she whipped up about 100 tubs of these goodies. They are THAT yummy & popular!

Jo gave some tubs to his company's customers and one of them went, "Oooooh! Home-made tarts! I loooooove that home-made feel!"
Coming from a grown man in a managerial position, I can't help but find it amusing, though in a sweet way. =D

Being the generous soul she always is, she gave me 2 tubs of pineapple tarts/rolls, 1 tub of kueh bulu, 1 tub of flower-like cookies & 1 tub of peanut biscuits. That melt-in-your mouth pastry & juicy filling!!
 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3!!!
Pineapple rolls are my most favourite CNY snacks, together with the spring rolls wrapped in pork floss!

Took me only a week to gobble all up. Only crumbs are left for Jo. Haha.
Replying emails & packing parcels late at night prior to CNY makes me a hungry bear.

年夜飯

Mum-in-law loves cooking & baking and is a miracle in the kitchen. It is mind-boggling how she can handle marketing, cooking and washing up all by herself. All these years, she does 12-15 dishes, with all the required garnishes (just like how we learnt during Home Econs!), for all the birthday buffets & festive feasts my in-laws held at their home.
If you have your own home like me, you would realise how unachievable this feat can be, okay maybe only for me.=P
She's a Martha Stewart. Amazing. =O

In-laws were remarking how big the dried mussels (in the stewed mushroom dish) we bought were. They were bigger than my thumb!
We children bought so much black moss that almost every other dish has it. =D

My favourites are the stewed pork with yam & the fish maw soup. I'm a totally soup person, typical of Cantonese!
The stewed pork with yam has to be prepared the night before, due to the long cooking time and the yam is the melt-in-the-mouth kind, with the flavour & taste totally locked in it. Awwww....*slurp*

初一

The pre-CNY workload took a toil on me, and I didn't do as many visitations as I wish on the first day of CNY. =(

Photos from cousin-in-law's facebook
One ritual of Jo's family is that lunch on the first day of CNY will always be vegetarian mee hoon and hot cheng tng soup. No meat dish at all.
His grandma started this and till now, they still observe this decades-long practice.
Although Jo doesn't know the reason for this, I personally find the consumption of vegetarian food on CNY Day 1 meaningful.

The thing I look most forward to the whole of CNY is my parents' cooking.
My mum's a working lady and doesn't cook a lot since I was young.
But my parents' cooking is definitely the highlight of my CNY celebration.
There were 盆菜,燜香菇,蒸魚,蒜茸蒸蝦,五福拼盤,藥材湯 & 自製湯圓!

Last year, my mum came up with her own recipe of 盆菜, from all the 海味 that we bought for her prior to Chinese New Year.
It was yummy-licious!! 100000000 times better than all those restaurants serving it!
So much more value-for-money too!
It takes her 4-5 hours to get it done, as the broth for the dish has to be prepared first, before steaming the dish with it.

I tried replicating it at home last year and it was a resounding...failure.
So this year, I got smarter and requested my mum to do one for me, so that Jo & I can have it again the next day at home!

Check out the magnets on my mum's fridge door! They were accumulated during my flying days.
Some colleagues like to collect Hard Rock shot glasses from all over the world, some collect the coins and some, like me, prefer to collect magnets.
I make it a point to get a magnet in a form which I feel best represent the city/country,
for e.g. the Mummy head from Egypt, the girl in hanbok from Seoul, the Forbidden Palace main building from Beijing, the Turkish rug & the evil eye (I can't make up my mind so I got both) from Istanbul, the scottish terrier from Harrods (London), the windmill from Holland, the Cambridge university crest from Cambridge, the Man. United logo from Manchester, the junk from Hong Kong, the little mermaid from Copenhagen, the b/w night shot of NYC, and the Beast profile (of Beauty & the Beast) from the Broadway show I watched with my buddy etc.
It sure brings back a lot of memories whenever I see the magnets. Some were bought with the last few dollars I have left at that time.

It was very hard to find suitable magnets in certain countries where tourism is not that commercialised.
For some cities, it took me several trips before I could find a suitable magnet, while for some that I know I might never return again, I would go into every single souvenir shop I passed by to hunt for a suitable magnet so that I would not leave the city empty-handed.

One of my favourites are the little SQ aeroplanes! They are limited editions, and actually represent the 3 aircraft types that I was trained in, complete with upper deck and doors for the Boeing Jumbo! *squeals*
I wanted to move them to my own home, but some of them are so stuck on the fridge door, that they will break, if I forcefully pull them out. =(

初二

With most visitations done, it was a simple home-cooked fare for early dinner.
Simple, because bulk of the dishes were done by my parents (which we brought home after yesterday's dinner) or bought.
What a breeze cooking was that day! =))

Menu for the evening:
  1. 盆菜, by Mum - I only had to pour the soup (also by Mum) in & steam it for 2 hours.
  2. 五香, by Dad - I didn't deep fry them, as I wanted my kitchen to stay clean, so I toasted them in the toaster oven for 20 minutes. Came out crispy too!
  3. Leftover ABC soup & stewed pork with yam from the day before
  4. Braised mushrooms, by Dad
  5. Yu-sheng, from Soup Restaurant
  6. Roast chicken, from Cold Storage, with cherry tomatoes & romaine lettuce for garnish
After all the feasting, Jo & I decided that was it. No more rich food for the rest of the week!

Around 9pm, the Husband got a bit bored and while listening to Youtube videos, he decided that we should head out to Karaoke while I was trying to blog about CNY. -__-
He excitedly made a call to check room availability and off we left home.
It has been a long while since spontaneity hit us this way.
Well, most of the time, I'm busy with TFL work at night. =P

初七

初七, the seventh day of the Lunar New Year, is also known as 人日,衆人的生日, the birthday of all mankind.
For the fun of it, Jo & I had our mini celebration at home, after his work. =D

Seeing so many people at the shopping centre carrying the red box from Sakae, I  thought it must be really tasty and queued for more than half an hour to get my hands on the Yu-sheng from Sakae.
It cost S$18.88, before GST, for a 1-2 person serving. But both Jo & I are unable to finish it.
I don't understand why there is lettuce in it but no pomelo. =(
Guess people bought the Sakae version probably for the salmon sashimi.
The Yu-sheng from Soup Restaurant tasted much better, in my opinion.

 初九

The ninth day of the Lunar New Year is 天宮誕,the birthday of the Heaven, the Jade Emperor to be precise.
Traditionally, most Singaporeans will begin the prayer & offering once the clock strike midnight.
True enough, around 12plus am, the smoke from the burning of joss paper by other residents wafted into my home and I stayed at the top floor!
I do think it's kinda heartwarming when many residents, most of them being young couples, actually still practice this century-old ritual. =)

One thing that some people might not realise is that there should be NO offering of meat for this prayer.
I know there are some who offer roast meat or pig trotters. This is such a big taboo!
上天有好生之德,大地有载物之厚
Why would the Heaven be so superficial and demand for the killing of another living being for His birthday?
He would not be pleased about it!
Human beings celebrate by feasting, most often on meat. But not the Heaven.
For those in doubt, they should read the well-known Buddhist sutra, 地藏經.
It is stated very clearly in one of the chapters about how wrong this practice is.

The offering of meat is such a misplaced conception! Urrrgh!

We were really happy to see the ends of the joss sticks & candle curling and everything went smoothly. =D
The major downside was that it was that time of the month for me and I couldn't help with anything, let alone touch the offerings. Jo had to do it all by himself.
In the midst of trying to get everything done on time, he missed out getting the sweet vegetarian pastries for the offerings. =(

I'm ending off this post with a picture of the beautiful flowers.
Jo was telling me that according to the auntie at the market, this red velvet-like flower only blooms once a year and always just before 天宮誕.
I tried googling for the name of the flower but to no avail.
How sweet it is that Mother Nature has a flower in an auspicious red no less, specially for the Heaven.
Reminds me of naming orchids after well-known people. =D

Here's wishing you all my readers a bountiful & prosperous Rabbit year ahead!!
新春快樂!
